Airbus celebrates best ever year

Airbus received a record number of aircraft orders for 2011 but it is warning that demand for new jets will fall sharply this year.

It said it received 1,419 orders, worth about £91bn, while rival arch-rival Boeing received 805 orders.

Airbus said 2011 was its most successful year ever and the 10th in a row with an increase in production. Demand was particularly strong for the fuel-efficient A320NEO medium-haul jet.

"With this innovation we established a new industry standard, appreciated by our customers and followed by the competition," said Airbus president and CEO Tom Enders. "With a solid backlog and an excellent cash position we are well prepared for the future."
